Small plane crashes on Long Island; 2 dead

NEW YORK (AP) ? A small plane carrying three people plummeted into a residential Long Island street with a fiery crash Sunday, killing two people aboard as neighbors tried to douse the flames with fire extinguishers and garden hoses, authorities and witnesses said.

The single-engine, propeller plane went down around noon in Shirley, shortly after taking off from nearby Brookhaven Calabro Airport, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said.

The front of the plane landed on a tree-lined street flanked with homes ? ending up about 100 feet from the nearest house and several hundred from half a dozen others ? and its tail plunged into a nearby construction trash bin, said Jeff Litwin, who lives on the street a few hundred feet from the crash on Helene Avenue. He was in his basement when he heard what sounded at first like thunder, but he then heard another explosion, realized it wasn't the weather and went outside.

A neighbor "was trying to put out the fire with a garden hose, but it was too hot and he couldn't get to a person trapped inside," Litwin said by phone.

Jane Unhjem, 60, of Goshen, N.Y. died several hours after being hospitalized with burns. Her husband, Erik Unhjem, 61, was listed in serious condition at Stony Brook University Medical Center.

Authorities did not release the name of a man who died at the scene. It was not immediately clear who was piloting the plane.

The crash tore down a tree and damaged a car. But no one was hurt on the ground, and the plane didn't damage any homes, Bergen said.

The FAA didn't immediately release the plane's identification number or owner's name, saying those would be disclosed once authorities confirmed the condition of those on the ground.

The National Transportation Safety Board is to investigate the cause of the crash.

The aircraft is a Socata TB10 and is registered to a man in Orlando, Fla., the FAA said. Known as a Tobago, the model is no longer manufactured.

A representative for Socata, part of the Paris-based aerospace and defense company Daher, declined to comment.

The plane was covered up later Sunday as police and firefighters converged on the crash scene and blocked off the road.

With a population of about 26,000, Shirley is near Long Island's southern shore and Fire Island.

No immediate lift for Romney from picking Ryan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Mitt Romney received no immediate boost to his White House bid by naming U.S. Representative Paul Ryan as vice presidential running mate, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Monday.

Some 51 percent of those surveyed said the decision did not change their opinion of Romney, a former private-equity executive and Massachusetts governor who will face President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.

Another 26 percent in the online poll said they viewed Romney more favorably after he added the 42-year-old Wisconsin congressman to the ticket on Saturday, while 23 percent said they viewed him less favorably.

The survey of 508 registered voters was conducted for Reuters from August 11 to August 13.

Ryan is a polarizing figure in Washington, where he has led his party's push to cut domestic spending, lower taxes and scale back the size of the federal government as chairman of the House of Representatives Budget Committee.

A hero to conservatives, Ryan has given Romney a jolt of energy on the campaign trail after several difficult weeks marked by gaffes and continued questions about his personal finances. The two men basked in the cheers of thousands of supporters at campaign stops in North Carolina on Sunday.

But Ryan remains largely unknown to the wider public.

While 80 percent of those surveyed said they had at least heard of Ryan, only 35 percent said they were familiar with him.

Some 42 percent said they did not know whether he was qualified or not to be president - a higher percentage than the 33 percent who said he was not qualified and the 26 percent who said he was.

One warning sign for the Romney campaign: by a margin of 44 percent to 29 percent, voters said the incumbent vice president, Joe Biden, was more qualified than Ryan to serve as president if the need arose.

"He's fairly unknown in who he is and what he stands for," said Ipsos vice president Julia Clark. "He's a Wisconsin congressman, not a nationally known figure."

That is likely to change in the coming weeks as Ryan campaigns across the country to build enthusiasm among grass-roots conservatives while Democrats attack his budget plan as one that would gut programs for the elderly and the poor.

The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 5.1 percentage points for all respondents.

Ryan's signature proposal would change the popular Medicare health plan for the elderly into a voucher program that would give future retirees a fixed amount of money to buy traditional Medicare insurance or competing private plans.

Ryan says that approach would rein in spiraling medical costs that threaten the program's solvency in coming decades. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated that one version of Ryan's plan, passed by the House last year, would increase retiree's out-of-pocket medical costs by about $6,400 annually.

Democrats argue that the plan would end guaranteed medical coverage for seniors, and have made it a centerpiece of their effort to win back control of the House.

With Ryan now on the Republican ticket, independent analysts say it could hurt Romney's chances of winning in retiree-heavy states like Florida.

But Ryan's plan might not be as toxic as Democrats think.

Between 54 percent and 49 percent of voters surveyed in a June 2011 Reuters/Ipsos poll said would support a Medicare voucher plan, depending on how the question was worded, with relatively little difference in support between Democrats and Republicans.

Firefighters and the Risk of Asbestos Exposure ? Mark Hall, Guest ...

Firefighters and the Risk of Asbestos Exposure

Firefighters, policemen, emergency medical service workers and all other public servants put their lives at risk each day to protect and serve their local residents. For firefighters, certain risks and hazards exist that are often unknown, unseen and unexpected. One such risk is asbestos exposure.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring yet hazardous mineral that is found in thousands of industrial materials and products used in homes, buildings and consumer items. When asbestos-containing materials are disturbed, asbestos fibers become airborne and are easily inhaled because they are microscopic.

Exposure to this material has been linked to respiratory diseases like mesothelioma and lung cancer, often taking years to develop. Those who work around asbestos for many years are most at risk of developing a related disease. As a result of the duties associated with their work, firefighters are put at a higher risk of interacting with asbestos. Surprisingly, an exposure risk has even included their protective gear.

How and Where Exposure Occurs

The most intense moments of a firefighter's job involves eliminating fires and rescuing those in danger. When fires occur within homes, buildings and other structures, asbestos-containing materials can get damaged, increasing the likelihood that the fibers will be released.

The following is a list of household products could contain asbestos, endangering firefighters in the event of a fire:

  • Roofing materials
  • Cement
  • Vinyl flooring
  • Wall lining/gaskets
  • Piping material
  • Wiring insulation
  • Refrigerator/freezer
  • Recessed lighting
  • Attic insulation

The same threats from homes are applied to commercial buildings. One of the more well-known instances of asbestos exposure involving firefighters is the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Dust from the destroyed buildings contained asbestos and other hazardous substances. Respiratory issues among public servants continue to linger as a result, including cases of mesothelioma.

Unfortunately for firefighters, the risk of asbestos exposure isn?t just limited to the location of the fire. In some cases, the risk follows them around. Fire equipment contained asbestos in earlier decades because of the material's heat-resistant characteristics. Equipment items included gloves, helmets and coats, all of which are considered staples of the firefighter uniform. Some of these items are still produced with asbestos, so be sure to ask your employer for information on the contents of your protective gear and how to keep the gear in good condition.

Firefighters, in addition to all first-responders, are encouraged to always wear protective gear during any hazardous environment. This should begin with ensuring that safety equipment is free of asbestos. Researching the materials and the manufacturer can help verify the status of the equipment.

Finally, it is highly recommended that all public servants conduct regular health checkups and screening for respiratory disease. Receiving X-Rays and communicating your occupational dangers can help your doctor detect the development of life-changing diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma.?

T-Mobile loses subscribers, smartphones flat

(AP) ? The long slide of T-Mobile USA continued in the latest quarter, as the country's No. 4 cellphone company lost subscribers and struggled to sign people up for smartphones.

The company, a subsidiary of Germany's Deutsche Telekom AG, said on Thursday that it lost a net 205,000 subscribers in the second quarter, a record for the period.

Among phone subscribers under contract, it lost 557,000 subscribers, also the highest number of the second quarter. Phone subscribers on contract-based plans pay the most, and are the bread and butter of large wireless carriers.

T-Mobile's revenue from monthly fees on contract service fell 9 percent from a year ago. The larger wireless carriers ? Verizon, AT&T and Sprint ? all managed to increase this number in the second quarter.

While other big carriers rely on boosting smartphone use to raise monthly fees, the number of smartphone users at T-Mobile USA was flat from the first quarter, at 11.6 million.

Thanks to job cuts, T-Mobile continued to be profitable, with a second-quarter net income of $207 million, nearly flat compared with $212 million a year ago.

Overall revenue fell 3 percent from a year ago to $4.9 billion.

The strong dollar helped T-Mobile's results boost those of its German parent, which reports results in euros.

Last year, T-Mobile agreed to be bought by AT&T Inc., but the deal was blocked by U.S. regulators. During the quarter, CEO Philipp Humm resigned, and was replaced by Jim Alling on an interim basis.

Murder trial of China ex-leader's wife ends

HEFEI, China (Reuters) - China's most politically sensitive trial in three decades ended in just about seven hours on Thursday after the wife of ousted Politburo member Bo Xilai did not contest charges of murdering a British businessman, a court official said.

A verdict will be delivered at a later date.

The official's account of the closed-door hearing in the eastern Chinese city of Hefei signals that Gu Kailai and a family aide are sure to be convicted in a case that has ended her husband's career and rocked China's leadership.

"The trial finished this afternoon and the court adjourned," official Tang Yigan told reporters. "The trial committee will announce the verdict after discussion. The date of the verdict will be announced.

"The accused (Gu) Kailai and Zhang Xiaojun did not raise objections to the facts and the charges of intentional homicide."

Gu's trial is seen by many Chinese as part of a push against Bo, an ambitious populist who made powerful enemies as he campaigned to join the next generation of top central leaders.

Bo was formerly considered a contender for the inner sanctum of power - the party's Politburo Standing Committee - in a once-in-a-decade leadership transition that is currently underway. The new leadership is expected to be unveiled in October.

Gu and her co-accused were charged with poisoning Briton Neil Heywood, a family friend, last year. The official said the court was told Zhang, the family aide, had put poison in a drink of water that Gu then gave to Heywood who was drunk at the time.

His body was found last November in a hotel in Chongqing, the city where Bo was the Communist Party chief.

Gu and Zhang face the death penalty if convicted. But many legal experts expect Gu will be convicted but only sentenced to a lengthy jail term.

Entry to the courtroom, in the capital of Anhui province, was restricted but two British diplomats were invited to be present because of the nationality of the victim. Journalists were not allowed in.

As the trial took place, police dragged away two Bo supporters into an unmarked car after they had appeared outside the courthouse, singing patriotic songs that were the trademark of Bo's populist leadership style and condemning the trial as a sham.

"I don't believe it. This case was decided well in advance," Hu Jiye, a middle-aged man wearing a T-shirt and baseball cap, told foreign reporters at the rear of the court building, which was cordoned off by dozens of police standing in heavy rain.

Hu and his friend were then shoved by plainclothed police into a car. His companion, also a middle-aged man, struggled, yelling "Why are you taking me? Why are you taking me?"

INTERNET CHATTER CENSORED

State censorship of Internet chatter on the trial was swifter than normal on Thursday, with users of China's popular Twitter-like service Sina Weibo playing cat and mouse with censors to discuss the case, using word play to try and get around the controls.

Gu, herself a career lawyer, was defended by a state-appointed lawyer with meager experience in criminal cases, leaving little doubt she will be convicted.

The state has decided who will represent Gu, denying her the use of a family lawyer - a move that has also prompted Gu's 90-year-old mother, Fan Xiucheng, to recently complain to the Justice Ministry, according to a source close to the family.

"The answer (from the ministry) was that the legal process did not have to be fully carried out in this case and that Fan should stop pestering them," the source said.

The trial of Gu, glamorous daughter of the ruling Communist Party aristocracy, is the most sensational since the conviction of the Gang of Four more than 30 years ago for crimes during the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution.

But despite British calls for the case to be handled fairly and to unearth the truth around Heywood's death, her defense has instead been entrusted to two provincial lawyers.

The two lawyers, Jiang Min and Zhou Yuhao, could not be reached for comment but a search of public information shows the more senior attorney, Jiang, is a specialist in financial cases and that neither has any obvious connection to the Bo family.

A newspaper profile of Jiang from 2005, which was posted on Jiang's own website, quoted him as saying that he was "an expert in financial law, who rarely conducts criminal defenses", although he has represented some officials accused of corruption in the more than 20 years he has been practicing law.

Little is known of Gu's other lawyer, Zhou, except that he, like Jiang, is from Anhui province. Provincial capital Hefei is a bustling city more than 1,000 km (650 miles) east of the scene of the alleged crime - Chongqing, the vast municipality formerly ruled by Bo.

GREEDY WIFE OR PROTECTIVE MOTHER?

Police sources initially claimed Gu had poisoned Heywood in a dispute over an illicit financial transaction she had wanted him to help her complete, and they portrayed Gu as a greedy wife who was translating her husband's connections into dollars.

But when Gu was formally indicted, the official allegation instead hinted at a personal motive, saying Heywood had made unspecified threats against her son Bo Guagua, a factor that may count as a mitigating circumstance and help Gu avoid execution.

The younger Bo, who is believed to be still in the United States after graduating from Harvard this summer, told CNN in an e-mail that he had submitted a witness statement to the court.

"I hope that my mother will have the opportunity to review them," he added. "I have faith that facts will speak for themselves." CNN said he did not elaborate.

The trial and sentencing of both Gu and Zhang are widely seen as a prelude to a possible criminal prosecution of Bo, who is being detained for violating party discipline - an accusation that covers corruption, abuse of power and other misdeeds.

Bo, who was a favorite of party leftists by promoting himself as a friend of the poor and an enemy of corruption, was sacked as Chongqing party chief in March after his police chief, Wang Lijun, identified Gu as a suspect in Heywood's death.

On Thursday morning, there was no sign of Gu's elderly mother, nor of any members of Heywood's family in or around the courtroom.

France headed for recession: central bank

PARIS (Reuters) - France's economy is likely to slip into a shallow recession in the third quarter, the Bank of France said on Wednesday, dashing hopes for a robust recovery this year and adding to signs that Europe's economic prospects are worsening.

The central bank's forecast for gross domestic product (GDP) to shrink 0.1 percent in the three months to September, following last month's estimate of a similar fall in the second quarter, suggests France's 2 trillion euro ($2.5 trillion) economy will struggle to meet this year's government growth target of 0.3 percent.

The weak outlook was reinforced by figures showing France's trade gap widened to 5.99 billion euros in June, from a downwardly revised 5.47 billion euros in May, dashing economists' expectations for the deficit to narrow.

Exports to Italy, Spain and Britain slumped, with sales of cars and transport materials particularly weak.

Southern European economies are already mired in recession as governments try to tame a debt crisis by pursuing austerity measures, and Wednesday's data added to signs that Europe's biggest economies are also stagnating.

Data from Germany on Wednesday showed both imports and exports falling, while Britain's central bank slashed its economic forecast and warned that factors weighing on growth may be more long-lasting than previously thought.

"The outlook for the coming months suggests a slight slowdown in economic activity," the Bank of France said. "GDP is expected to decline by 0.1 percent in the third quarter."

President Francois Hollande, elected in May on a pledge to halt rising unemployment and reverse industrial decline, has been confronted since taking office by a round of industrial layoffs and the need to curb spending to meet deficit targets.

The Bank of France's monthly survey showed industrial business sentiment in July at weakest since August 2009, with automotive and textiles firms particularly gloomy.

Service companies were also more negative, especially in transport and administration, with the sentiment indicator at its weakest since November 2009.

ORDERS WEAK, INVENTORIES MOUNT

Order books flagged and inventories rose throughout the economy, undermining the government's prediction of a return to growth in the third quarter after stagnation in the first three months of the year.

"If growth is flat or negative in the second and third quarters, it will be very difficult for the government to reach its 0.3 percent growth target this year," said Fabrice Montagne, economist at Barclays, saying his bank would revise down its 0.4 percent growth forecast for this year.

France is due to publish data on second quarter economic growth on Tuesday.

Its biggest carmaker Peugeot announced plans last month to close a plant near Paris and cut 8,000 jobs, prompting Industry Minister Arnauld Montebourg - an outspoken advocate of protectionism - to call on Brussels to monitor rising imports of South Korean-made cars.

The Socialists plan 7 billion euros in new taxes for this year on large companies and wealthy households, chasing a deficit target of 4.5 percent of GDP. The government has said 33 billion euros will be needed to meet a 2013 deficit goal of 3 percent of GDP.

Barclay's Montagne said weak growth should have only marginal implications for the government deficit this year provided the economy could avoid a contraction.

"However, if we end the year with negative growth, we will certainly need some adjustments to reach the deficit target," Montagne said, predicting growth of between 0.5 and 1.0 percent next year rather than the 1.2 percent the government forecasts.
