A 12-year-old dolphin at a Hawaii resort has given birth to a female calf that seems to instantly recognize her mother in a video of the birth posted online.

Footage of last week's birth on the Big Island shows the baby dolphin's tail moments before she emerges from her mother. Once she is born, she shoots up to the water's surface to take her first breath, then quickly swims alongside her mother.
The birth occurred in a manmade lagoon at Dolphin Quest Hawaii at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, where visitors can touch and swim with the marine mammals.

Resort officials will monitor the baby around the clock for now, as its first 30 days of life are its most critical in terms of survival, said Julie Rocho-Levine, manager of marine animals for Dolphin Quest. Trainers will closely note when the baby nurses, among other things, she told The Associated Press on Monday.
The rate of survival for babies of first-time mother dolphins in the wild is about 50 percent, Rocho-Levine said. But that rate is much higher for dolphins born with access to top-notch care from humans, she said.
Marilee Menard, executive director of the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums, said 70 percent of the dolphins in accredited facilities in North America were born in a zoo or aquarium.
Officials say it's the first calf for the mother, Keo.
"I'm a mom myself, so I feel like I was able to appreciate her just calm, relaxed nature throughout the whole entire situation," said Rocho-Levine, who was there for the birth.
"It seemed as though she (Keo) was seeking out that human companionship and finding comfort in the people she knows and spends her days with," she said.
Keo was calm enough to allow veterinarians to perform an ultrasound during labor.
Dolphin Quest officials plan to wait to name the baby until after its first month of life.

Last week I had the opportunity to do a preview of the new Whole Foods grocery store in Newport Beach. My initial impression is that this place was made for foodies! Located at 415 Newport Center Drive, Newport Beach California, this store is proof that the ?Foodie? culture is well ingrained in Orange County California. This multi-million dollar store is an amusement park for anyone who loves food. My only fear with this store is that if I go in for a bag of apples, I may not?come out for a couple hours!
What makes Whole Foods a serious foodie destination versus just another ?foofoo yuppie? grocery store? This store is a serious homage to all the latest food trends, and it embraces the local and organic movement. Just like the rest of the Whole Foods chain stores, you will find a very serious?selection of organic and locally grown produce, hand crafted foods, and high-end center store items. The key differences at this store reside in the perimeter of the store, mainly their Beehive Tea Market, Coffee Station, Back Bay Tavern and their fresh craft food stations.
?If you are looking for something a little more ?adult,? the beehive also offers some alcohol-infused tea drinks and several draft craft beers. Attached to the beehive is their outdoor patio, complete with?over sized?patio chairs, sofas and a fire pit. The manager confirmed that you are allowed to purchase alcohol in the store and drink it on their patio. Here is what I imagined: ordering some refreshing tea drinks, picking up a bottle of wine, chocolate and cheese from the store, and enjoying a picnic on their spacious patio.?
Back Bay Brewery
Probably the crown jewel of the Whole Foods store ? what other grocery store has a gastropub? This restaurant has a rich focus on food, micro-craft beer and wine, as well as a stylized subtle throwback to prohibition era Harlem. The look of prohibition era Harlem isn?t obvious, but more subtle with exposed brickwork, slightly industrial pendulum lights that are dressed with yellow glass, and the center piece: a solid mahogany bar 
taken from an old-school pub in Harlem that dates back to the 1920?s. The details are pretty complete, with hex tiles and clear stained wood furniture that allows the natural grain in the wood to add to the ambiance of the gastropub. This was one of the best decoration jobs I have seen in a while.
The food was more impressive. The dishes were simple comfort foods with a naughty edge, just like a Kansas girl going to Vegas for a bachelorette party. The menu featured about 15 main course items, five appetizers and five salads. I was able to try most of them, here are my assessments:

?The Veggie Plate? ? ?Innocent Vegetables lightly covered in Tempura ?and fried. This dish was light enough to make you still feel sexy on a date.
Wings ? Wings made from local and organic chickens. You can taste the difference in the flavor of the meat. The Wings came in your choice of Buffalo, Inferno or Ginger Soy.
Chicken Club ? Grilled Pittman Farms chicken breast and house smoked bacon with lettuce and tomato on a chibata roll. I usually do not select sandwiches because I think they will be dry, but this one is worth trying.
Tofu Sticks ? A really good interpretation of tofu suitable for folks who don?t think they like tofu. I am no granola, but I liked this dish. The tofu had a lot of flavor. They use wing sauces (buffalo, inferno, ginger soy) to give this locally produced tofu a nice flavor.
Mediterranean Cal Organic Chopped Kale Salad ? The way kale should be made. This version of Kale can make even the most fussy of 8 year olds like healthy, flaky greens. Tell you what ? bring in your 4th grader and don?t tell them what they are eating and have them try this, they just might turn into a future foodie.
SoPac Caesar -Rough cuts of romaine stacked with parmesan and Caesar dressing and croutons.
Fish and Chips ? Batter made with local beer . ?Although these were not the ?best fish and chips I have tasted, they were good.
Wasabi Pepper Seared Scallops - One of the best dishes on the menu, and despite the name, the dish was not spicy. Fresh scallops are seared and topped with micro greens. They are served with a forest of mushrooms and asparagus saut?. Great flavor combination from the sweet protein of scallop with the very subtle wasabi pepper.
Gingered Atlantic Salmon ? One of the few exceptions on the menu where I thought the food was a little boring. Although the fish itself had great natural flavors, I felt that it needed a lot more seasoning or a marinade. The salmon is pan-seared to retain its natural juices and served with radish salmon roe. On the side is an organic salad that is dressed with Peruvian corn vinaigrette.
Panko Crusted Eggplant Parmesan Fondue ? This dish was one my favorites. Chunks of eggplant are tossed in white truffle and panko and crisply fried. The fried eggplants are topped with a dollop of ?cashew parmesan?fondue.?
Cabernet Braised Short Ribs ? Short Ribs braised in Cabernet Sauvignon The Short ribs are ?served with root vegetables, corn cake, tomato confit and a Pobalano Sauce. I?didn?t?try this dish personally, but Mike from www.eatingmywaythroughoc.com loved this dish.
Tavern Burger- I was not expecting much from the burger, although I was very pleasantly surprised by the flavor and juiciness of the beef. The bun and toppings were pretty impressive, even better since it was topped with bacon jam.

In addition to the food, they featured a very impressive selection of draft micro-craft brews, many from local breweries. Some of the better beers that I noticed included Allagash Brewing (Portland), Ballast Point (San Diego), The Bruery (Orange County), and Bootleggers (Orange County). The wine list was also pretty impressive, and featured a variety of price points. Some wines that stood out included a buttery Chardonnay by Rombauer and Hitching Post Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara.
My Final Thoughts
This was a very impressive new Whole Foods in Newport Beach that was able to impress quite a few foodies who attended their media sneak-peek preview. I was very impressed by Whole Foods? strong commitment to its Global Animal Partnership, locally produced food, organic materials, and sustainability. These practices are engrained in the set up and practices of the store, making it easy for customers to be a part of these practices. Whole Foods did an amazing job with this store and made it a foodie destination with shopping, a restaurant and bar. I know I will be back, you just might see me on the patio with a bottle of wine and stinky cheese!

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The water quality of lakes and coastal systems will be altered if hurricanes intensify in a warming world, according to a Yale study in Geophysical Research Letters.
Bryan Yoon, the study's co-author and a doctoral student at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, found that last summer during Hurricane Irene -- the worst storm in the New York area in 200 years -- record amounts of dissolved organic matter darkened Catskill waters and affected the Ashokan Reservoir that supplies New York City with drinking water.
"This is the biggest rain event ever sampled for the region," said Yoon, who conducted the study with Pete Raymond, professor of ecosystem ecology at Yale.
As a primary source of drinking water for New York City, the Catskill Mountains is designated as forest preserve, and roughly 62 percent of the watershed studied is protected by New York State. Over a two-day period in late August 2011, Irene dropped over 11 inches of rain -- 17 percent of the average annual rainfall -- on Esopus Creek that feeds the Ashokan.
Yoon found that the volume of water discharged by the creek increased 330-fold, and the creek exported an unprecedented amount of dissolved organic matter to the Ashokan, equivalent to 43 percent of its average annual export. Yoon likened the increase in dissolved organic matter to a person being fed 40 percent of his annual food in a few days.
Although not discussed as often as other water quality topics such as turbidity, dissolved organic matter plays a critical role in the aquatic environment and for the provision of clean drinking water. In moderate quantities, dissolved organic matter also provides food and nutrients for microbial communities.
In excessive amounts, however, dissolved organic matter could lead to numerous environmental problems, Yoon's study found. Dissolved organic matter binds with metal pollutants and transports them; interferes with ultraviolet processes that reduce pathogens in water; affects aquatic metabolism; and leads to the formation of carcinogenic disinfection byproducts, such as trihalomethanes during chlorination.
"All of those problems become more serious as larger quantities of dissolved organic matter are transported to lakes and coastal systems," he said. "Hurricane Irene was a prime example that there is no limit to the amount of dissolved organic matter that can be exported by extreme rain events. Surprisingly, concentrations of dissolved organic matter didn't get diluted."
Raymond said that frequent hurricanes will flush more organic matter out of the ground and into lakes, reservoirs and coastal waters, potentially altering their biogeochemical cycles.

Malcolm Turnbull will speak to residents in Ocean Grove. Shadow Minister for Communications and Broadband Malcolm Turnbull will visit Ocean Grove tomorrow to discuss improving the region?s internet and mobile phone coverage.
Mr Turnbull was invited to the afternoon tea by Liberal candidate for Corangamite Sarah Henderson, who is aiming to win the seat from Labor?s Darren Cheeseman at the next federal election.
Ms Henderson said residents would learn more about the Coalition?s plan to make high-speed broadband available in the electorate faster and cheaper than the federal government?s National Broadband Network.
?Despite having patchy and inadequate broadband coverage, the majority of the Corangamite electorate was completely ignored in the government?s recent NBN rollout,? she said.
?The afternoon will also be an opportunity to discuss difficulties in getting access to adequate internet or mobile phone coverage throughout the Corangamite electorate. Malcolm and I look forward to discussing these and other issues of concern to local residents.?
The NBN rollout map shows work to install the NBN will begin in and around Ocean Grove, Leopold and Torquay within the next three years.
Ms Henderson said Mr Turnbull would also speak at a communications and broadband forum she is hosting in Geelong tomorrow.
Mr Turnbull launched a national broadband survey yesterday but said the Coalition could not reveal its fully-costed alternative to the NBN until after the election.

Heath Bell made a local radio appearance on ?The Dan Sileo Show? in Miami today and had some not-so-nice things to say about Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen.
?It?s hard to respect a guy that doesn?t tell you the truth or doesn?t tell you face to face,? Bell said on 560-WQAM. ?There?s probably reasons why.?
Bell is upset with how his demotion from the closer role was handled and with his lack of an opportunity to reclaim the job despite pitching fairly well of late:
I stunk in April, plain and simple. I said I stunk, I worked hard, I busted my butt. I think I?ve had a tremendous second half. I?m not closing?I know that. But I just kept my mouth shut because I want to regain what I had, and I feel like I can?t do that. ?
It?s just one of those things that?what you see is what you get. I?m not going to be two-faced. I?m not going to sneak around your back and say this and that.
Ripping someone on the radio doesn?t count as ?around your back? does it? Just double-checking.
Bell?s beef with Guillen is no surprise, as the Showtime cameras captured the two of them having a relatively heated discussion in the manager?s office before ?The Franchise? reality series was canceled earlier this season.
Bell has a 5.19 ERA overall this season, but since being stripped of closing duties in June he?s thrown 26 innings with a 3.12 ERA and 25/7 K/BB ratio. He?s owed $9 million next season and $9 million in 2014, so odds are whether Guillen is still the Marlins? manager or not Bell will get another crack at ninth-inning duties.

Foreign currency exchange represents the largest asset class in the world with a volume that is even bigger than the daily turnover of all the stock markets in the world combined. As of April, 2010, the Bank of International Settlements placed the average daily turnover of foreign exchange at almost $4 trillion.
Governments, banks and other financial institutions, international organizations like the UN, hedge funds, brokers, and individual investors are the main participants of the forex market. And, perhaps you may not be aware of it, but when you buy something from a foreign online auction site you are actually participating in this market, since your payment processor does the exchange for you so that payment can be made in the local currency where the auction site is located.
The foreign currency exchange allows unhampered trading transactions between countries. Towards the twenty-first century, the forex market saw a phenomenal rise in trading volume as currency speculators saw earning opportunities in the burgeoning international trade and travel business. Q: I read your column as often as I find time and I wanted to ask a question.
I noticed that you won some bodybuilding titles and trained some male and female champions, but I have not read anything about that in your column. Is there a reason that you don?t write about bodybuilding, fitness or figure competitions?
My wife and I are interested in competing in a bodybuilding and a figure competition and we wanted to know what we would need to do to get prepared for it.

A: The reason that I have not written about bodybuilding or figure competitions is because most of our readers are everyday people looking to lose weight and become lean and healthy, rather than compete in a competition.
With that said, I want you to know that I care about everyone, and I would love to answer your question.
Yes, I had the good fortune and blessing to achieve my lifelong goal of winning the Mr. USA title, along with 18 other titles in bodybuilding. I also was blessed to have trained more than 400 champions in bodybuilding, fitness and figure competitions.
My life has been an incredible journey and one that affords me the opportunity to help others with their the goals from the experiences I have lived and learned from.
So lets talk shop here, brother.
First, to get ready for a competition you must focus on creating a body that is in proportion.
Whether you are competing as a male bodybuilder or, Jacqueline, as a female fitness competitor, you must focus on overall symmetry. You must make sure that all muscle groups are trained properly to afford you a body that looks shapely, fit, defined and balanced.
The judges also will look for a low body-fat level with good definition.
At the same time, you must be able to present it in a favorable way when you pose on stage, as you will be compared to other competitors in a lineup as well as judged on your independent posing routine.
Your workouts and diet must be designed with all of those qualities in mind, and it must be progressive and adjusted as your body changes. A lot of knowledge and work must go into preparing someone for a competition. A clean and healthy diet must be implemented to create a healthier metabolic rate and then utilized to develop a leaner body. Then that diet must be manipulated to have some lower carbohydrate days and some higher carbohydrate days to be able to obtain an extremely low body-fat level that will highlight the muscle definition on the competition stage.
The intensity of each workout must increase so that your muscles are forced to adapt to the added demands by getting harder, stronger and more defined.

The Apple iPhone 5 is without a doubt the best hardware to reach the market this year in terms of design, engineering, and manufacture. It is an incredible smartphone that pleases from nearly every angle. Even still, it's not perfect.
The Apple iPhone has become so ingrained in the consciousness of American popular culture that you probably already know if the iPhone 5 is for you or not. Ever since its 2007 debut, the iPhone has been a constant fixture on TV, in the movies, at the office, or in the stadium. Apple has sold more than 200 million of them. They are everywhere, and most people are familiar with the iPhone. But Apple is a polarizing company, and people tend to love Apple products or loathe them. That begs the question, how do you feel about the iPhone 5? Let us help you figure it out.
Body
The iPhone 5 is a stunning achievement in design and engineering. From a distance, it may look like a common oblong slab, but upon close examination it is clear how much thought and work Apple put into designing it. No other phone manufacturer has crafted so fine a piece of hardware.
To be quite frank, I didn't think I was going to like the iPhone 5. The leaked photos that have littered the web over the last few months were unappealing to me. I didn't like the elongated look, nor the two-tone colors on the back. Now that I have one in my hand, the design choices made by Apple make a lot more sense to me.
The first thing I noticed when picking the iPhone 5 up is the weight. There's nothing to it. It's as if you're playing with a toy, not a $649 (that's the full retail price) piece of electronics. Apple says the iPhone 5 is 18% thinner and 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S, and you can tell right away when you use it. The lack of weight is incredible, and the slim profile is impressive. It's so thin and light that it simply disappears when you put it in a pocket. You can forget about it completely.
?As with the iPhone 4/4S, the materials of the iPhone 5 are top-of-the-line. The fit and finish of the manufacturing is absurdly good. There isn't a single phone available for sale today that offers the same high-class feel of the iPhone 5. The front is glass, the back and sides are aluminum, and the back has two glass panels (one at the top and one at the bottom). The aluminum has a matte finish that contrasts with the shiny glass panels. Apple switched from the glass back of the 4/4S to aluminum in part to make the iPhone 5 thinner and lighter, but also to make it less breakable. With so much metal built into the design, it should be more durable than the iPhone 4/4S were.
Where the iPhone 4/4S had sharp edges, the iPhone 5's back corners have been softened by angled cuts of the aluminum frame. The glass-and-aluminum sandwich look of the iPhone 4/4S is gone. The seam between the glass panel on the front of the iPhone 5 and its aluminum frame is practically invisible. These design choices make the iPhone dramatically more comfortable to hold and use. Toss in the thin profile and trimmed weight, and it's a wonder Apple had any room on the inside to stuff the (impressive) guts that power the iPhone 5.
One thing that I have come to dislike about the iPhone 4/4S design is the way the small 3.5-inch display looks on the front of the phone. The bezel is too thick, and it calls attention to just how small the screen is. That effect is gone on the iPhone 5. Thanks to the larger 4-inch screen and reduced bezel, the balance looks better all around. The iPhone 5 still has the single, physical home button below the display. This is the one aspect of the iPhone 5's hardware that feels just a wee bit on the cheap side to me. The travel and feedback of the home button are excellent, but it makes a loud "clack" when pressed that just doesn't sound as good as it should.
The volume buttons are on the left edge, exactly where they were on the iPhone 4/4S. The volume buttons are little circles that are separated by about a centimeter. The "up" volume button doubles as a camera shutter button. The travel and feedback of these buttons is perfect, and their shape makes them easy to find without looking. The little flip switch to turn the ringer on and off is there, too, and works perfectly. The lock button is all by itself on the top of the iPhone 5. It also has excellent travel and feedback.
The headphone jack has been moved to the bottom of the iPhone. I have mixed feelings about this choice. I prefer the headphone jack to be on top, but I can understand the reasons behind the relocation. Apple altered the antenna design, and needed the space at the top of the phone for certain components. Apple also decided that putting the port on the bottom makes more sense for people who like to stick their phone in their pocket with the top pointed down.
Of course, one of the biggest changes on the iPhone 5 is that Apple has done away with the decade-old 30-pin connector in favor of the new Lightning connector. Apple has once again ignored industry standards and chosen its own design over that used by the rest of the wireless industry. Simply put, it's annoying. There's no good reason for Apple to choose this new proprietary port over micro-USB other than to rake in more money.
All that griping aside, the Lightning connector is much easier to use than the 30-pin connector was. The 30-pin had to be inserted a particular way, but the Lightning connector is reversible; you can stick the plug in any way you want and it won't hurt the iPhone. The cable itself has a slightly smaller profile, and is easier to wrap up and store because there's no longer a big, bulbous 30-pin connector at the end.
As with all iPhones, the iPhone 5's battery is inaccessible. You can't swap it out or pull it.
Last, the iPhone 5 uses a new nano SIM card. It's a brand new design, smaller even than the micro SIM card used in the iPhone 4/4S. You can not switch the nano SIM into another phone without the use of a third-party adapter (sold separately). Obviously, Apple doesn't expect that many iPhone users will ever pull their SIM card out. In order to eject the SIM card you need to use a small paperclip or similar tool.
There's no denying that the iPhone 5 is an outstanding piece of hardware. I haven't reviewed a single phone this year that comes even close in terms of quality and craftsmanship.

While the latest software for OS X Lion isn't nearly as exciting as a couple of other updates that Apple released today, Lion users will find a few worthwhile improvements within the new OS X 10.7.5 update. Most importantly, the latest software introduces Gatekeeper, a security feature from Mountain Lion that makes it more difficult to inadvertently install malicious software. The update also brings improved WiFi reliability for the iMac (late 2009 and newer) and squashes a bug that'd caused Launchpad icons to become rearranged. You'll find an even greater number of fixes / improvements after the break, and it's also worth a mention that even Snow Leopard users have received a bit of love today in the form of a security update. Writing on the Astrid Blog, UX lead Henry Tsai explains that using this IFTTT recipe and adding Astrid as a contact will let you call up Siri, speak "tell Astrid to buy some eggs," and Siri will email your to-do to Astrid, which will then route it to your to-do list automatically.

The company's touting three new models: SLYR, PLYR 1 and PLYR 2, all of which were quietly detailed on its site within the last week. While Astro caters its full-on gaming audio systems (A30, A40 and A50) above the $200 mark, these Skullcandy-branded headsets essentially bring the ethos of those models to more wallet-friendly prices point of $80 to $180 -- not to mention in closer competition with the likes of Turtle Beach and Tritton. Most notably, Astro was quick to highlight to us that Skullcandy's new batch of gaming-focused earblasters have been created from the ground-up, unlike its models passed which were just tweaks to its existing -- and less than well-received -- headsets. Getting down to specifics, the currently available $80 SLYR serves as its entry-level set, netting you a wired stereo setup. The headset features a foldable boom mic, along with an inline remote for controlling the volume, balance of game audio voice chat and selecting from a trio of EQ. Lucky for games, music and movies (taking cues from the A50 and Mixamps). If you're willing to part ways with $130 or -- a slightly spendier -- $180, you'll be able to respectively pickup the PLYR 2 or 1 in the coming months. Both headsets are identical (save for color options), but that $50 premium on SLYR 2 notably snags you Dolby Headphone surround sound virtualization.
If anything, we'd say they largely take cues from Astro's portability-inclined A30, albeit with a design that's streamlined with more curves -- and dare we say it, sexier. On each, you'll find a rotating boom mic on the left earcup, while the right cup houses a power button, EQ switch, mini-USB port and a volume / mix-balance control. Wireless connectivity is handled by puck which connects to your console much like the A50, but there's no mention of Kleer audio processing this time. Lastly, all three models are naturally compatible with Xbox, PS3 and PCs, just like Astro's offerings. Windows 8 is coming folks, and so is an onslaught of new machines featuring Microsoft's something-for-everyone OS. Dell already showed us some of its fresh consumer Win8 hardware back at IFA 2012, and now it's the enterprise's turn to shine. First up is the Latitude 10 tablet, which packs an Intel Atom SoC, a 10.1-inch IPS 1366 x 768 LCD display covered in Gorilla Glass, 8-megapixel primary camera plus an HD front-facing shooter. It's got 2GB of RAM and up to 128GB of eMMC NAND storage, plus an SD card slot should the integrated storage prove insufficient. Connectivity comes via one full-size USB 2.0 port, a microUSB charging socket, mini-HDMI, a headphone/microphone combo jack, proprietary docking port and a micro-SIM slot for WWAN use. The Latitude 10 packs up to a 60Wh battery, which isn't remarkable in and of itself, but the fact that it's removable is. That means road warriors can travel with a spare cell or two to keep their slate in the juice no matter how long they work on it. While the swappable battery can keep the 10 from being tethered to an outlet, the dock Dell built for it ensures it'll have a stylish place to rest when it is. The dock expands the slate's connectivity with four USB 2.0 sockets, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI and audio output.
Next is the Optiplex 9010 all-in-one desktop we saw earlier this year. It still has the same 23-inch, 1920 x 1080 panel on the front and vPro-equipped Ivy Bridge silicon lurking beneath -- the only change is the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8. The Latitude 6430u is an addition to Dell's venerable business laptop line, and is the first to bear the Ultrabook moniker. It's generous to label the 6430u as such, as it's .82 inches thick and weighs 3.7 lbs, but it's still a fairly thin and light laptop -- plus it has the same solid magnesium chassis construction as its Latitude brethren. The 6430u crams a 14-inch, 1366 x 768 matte display into its 13.3-inch chassis, and users have the option of Ivy Bridge Core i3, i5 and i7 silicon with vPro, up to 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB worth of solid state storage. Naturally, there's 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth and mobile broadband available for wireless connectivity. Unfortunately, we can't tell you how much Dell's new business computers will cost, but we do know that they'll be available when Windows 8 is, which is to say late October.
