How to pick from a sky full of clouds - Talk Mobile

If we talk about cloud services, there are several major players in just the storage-and-syncing category, plus dozens more smaller entities. Some are tied to a specific platform, some are entirely platform agnostic, and yet others are best when paired with the platform with whom they share a maker, but yet still work alright most everywhere else.

So how are we supposed to pick a cloud? Should we go with the one that comes with our phone, or is there an advantage to going off the reservation and using a third-party service?

Can we use multiple cloud services? Will they work together, or just ignore each other? Is there a good reason to jump on the multiple cloud bandwagon?

And what if we want to switch to a different cloud service? What price do we have to pay? And we're not talking dollars and cents here.

Corvette sellers weigh quick profit vs. long-term ... - Automotive News

TO GOUGE OR NOT?

In the early scramble for 2014 Corvettes, some dealers are demanding $10,000 or more above sticker.

DETROIT -- Chevrolet dealers preparing for the 2014 Corvette Stingray's arrival in early October face a choice between a short-term windfall and long-term loyalty.

Do they take advantage of feverish early demand for the first Vette redesign in seven years and charge thousands above list price? Or do they score loyalty points with customers by sticking to the sticker?

Some dealers seem ready to risk a little wrath. In a recent post on a Corvette fan message board, an irate customer of a California dealership griped about the price quote he received on a Stingray: "$10K" above sticker.

Because the poster had bought a Volt plug-in hybrid from the same store two years ago, he figured the sales manager wouldn't gouge him on the Stingray. "Needless to say they just lost me and my wife as customers," he fumed.

Price gouging isn't uncommon during the start of buzzed-about launches. In late 2010, some Chevy dealers marked up the Volt by $10,000. Launches of the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 muscle car and the 2000 Chrysler PT Cruiser also commanded prices far above sticker.

The Stringray launch offers especially fertile ground for dealership gouging, given the sports car's fervent fan base, critical acclaim for the redesigned model and the likelihood of tight supplies early on. The Stingray's base price is $51,995 for the coupe and $56,995 for the convertible, which won't arrive until late in the year. Both prices include freight.

Research firm IHS Automotive expects General Motors to produce 12,000 units this year and 30,000 next year. More of the cars than usual likely will be earmarked for overseas as GM seeks to build the Corvette brand globally.

A GM spokesman wouldn't confirm production details and said the automaker can't control prices that dealers charge.

Coughlin Chevrolet in Pataskala, Ohio, near Columbus, is putting a priority on customer loyalty by charging list price, says Rick Conti, the store's Corvette sales manager. Coughlin, one of the nation's top Corvette sellers, already has nearly 100 Stingray orders and expects to sell an additional 75 during the 2014 model year, Conti says.

"Guys who go above sticker -- that's a one-shot deal," says Conti, whose e-mail signature reads "Rick Corvette Conti." "These are customers who you're going to see again, and they'll remember that. I'm looking at the bigger picture."

A manager at a Chevy dealership in the West, who spoke on condition that his store not be identified, says he will sell his initial Stingrays for thousands above the list price. He says mystery shoppers dispatched by his dealership into rival Chevy stores routinely have been quoted prices of $10,000 to $20,000 above list.

Managers at his store have decided on markups half the size of the competition's. He figures the store can please zealous shoppers by helping them be among the nation's first Stingray owners, but at a lower price than rivals are offering.

"If the competition is charging $15,000 above," the manager says, "we'll charge $7,500."

Investing in The Future

By Matthew Franceschini, CEO, Entity Solutions.

The shortage of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills within the workforce has been the source of growing local disquiet since the closing years of the last century. It was then, as the first of the children of the science-led space age began to approach retirement that the lack of qualified replacement workforce skills began to garner attention.

The issue was raised again recently with the release of Lifting our Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Skills, a 2013 report from the Australian Industry Group. The study noted that an estimated three quarters of Australia?s fastest growing occupations require STEM skills, yet approximately one quarter of job applicants do not have the necessary skills and the same number lack workplace experience.

The issue is far from unique to Australia. All across the western world, the ageing population and a declining interest in STEM careers are causing concern among governments and industry.? How can companies and economies continue to grow if the requisite skills aren?t there to keep the wheels of industry in motion?

To add to the problem, advancements in technology and changes to business practices are raising new challenges and creating demand for new skills. It?s arguable that now, more than ever before, workforce education and training have become ongoing necessities.

A problem with many solutions

It is widely acknowledged that to solve the STEM problem, action will need to be taken on a number of fronts. First and foremost, at a national and state level, we need to encourage more graduates with the right training.? To do this, we will need to make STEM careers more attractive. From early childhood on, within our infants and primary schools we need to engage our youngsters in maths and science, just as we already do for literacy.

As students reach move from secondary to tertiary education, we must also find a way of combining learning and training with greater workplace experience, perhaps by expanding our vision of the apprenticeship model, so that our graduates are more experienced, better prepared and more attractive to potential employers.

While some action is already under way, all of the proposed measures will take time and it will be years before we start to see any significant increase in the number of STEM graduates coming through the education system.? In the meantime, businesses need a solution now.

Therefore, they must plan; they must be prepared to undertake their own initiatives to source the right people and to encourage employees as they build a corporate skills bank.

Strategies for companies

A skills gap analysis is essential if an organisation is to understand what skills it currently has, the skills it requires, and if it is to have any chance of planning skills development for future needs.

When it comes to employing new skills, the shortage of appropriate candidates means that companies need to make their employment offers stand out if they want to attract the best possible people. Competitive remuneration is a good start, but flexibility in hours and work location can also play a major role.? Other factors that may tip a candidate?s decision in a given direction include the ability to work with leading technologies, access to mentors, training courses or an allowance of time for external study, and the very nature of the work challenge.

To increase skills levels among existing employees, companies should encourage study by offering incentives such as bonuses, co-payment of course fees and/or the offer of study time for approved courses.

Contractors help manage the workload

Encouraging staff to undertake additional training almost inevitably brings change to work hours and workloads due to employee time being diverted to classes, study or exams.? Organisations will need to accommodate the changes (within reason), and this is where white collar contractors (referred to as Independent Professional or IPros by Entity Solutions) can help.

IPros provide an overflow workforce that is available to step in when employees are engaged in training. Whether the employee is attending a one-off private course or chooses ongoing study at a tertiary institution, the IPro can be there for the duration to ensure none of the day-to-day work suffers.

A well-chosen IPro will also bring new expertise in systems, methodologies or practices. When this is the case, rather than leaving it to chance, the employer should consider how best to capitalise on the expertise, perhaps by formalising a skills transfer or mentoring role as part of the contracting relationship.? Such an arrangement adds value and challenge for the IPro at the same time as benefiting employees and the employer.

Specialised help when needed

One of the biggest problems facing employers right now is the loss of senior employees due to retirement. These are the employees who may have several decades? worth of experience and knowledge about the company, its clients and the industry.? They are people who can?t easily be replaced, especially by a new graduate.

Once again, a seasoned IPro, can help fill the gap, guiding the remaining staff until they are ready to operate as a functional team on their own. In some instances, IPros provide mentoring to the chosen successor, helping the person to gain the confidence and experience that will allow them to grow into the role.

In the years to come, industry groups and governments will continue to refine their ideas on how to best address the STEM skills gap.? New incentives will emerge to encourage students to take up studies in STEM.? The way we teach these subjects will change due to increased industry input.? And hopefully, we will see a growing number of STEM graduates coming out of Australia?s tertiary institutions.

Until that time however, businesses need to plan more actively for the skills they wish to acquire and develop. They will need to invest directly in education and training of their staff, and they will need to find new, flexible and creative ways to fulfill their workforce needs.? As they do so, experienced IPros are likely to become an important part of the skills development solution.

Distil Union intros Wally's protective big brother: Wally Case for iPhone 5

Remember Wally? It is an attachable leather wallet for the iPhone 5 that came out earlier this year and was a real hit on Kickstarter. Now the team at Distil Union in beautiful Charleston, SC, have decided that they'd like to protect your iPhone 5 a bit more and today they're introducing the Wally Case for iPhone 5 (US$40 pre-order on Kickstarter).

What's different? The original Wally stuck to the back of your iPhone 5 with a nano-suction material, but didn't offer any protection to the sides of the phone. Wally Case takes a polycarbonate frame with a scratch-resistant coating, and then adds that luxurious Argentinian vegetable-tanned leather wallet with the convenient pull-tab that makes accessing your cards and cash so easy.

The Distil Union team sent me a Wally Case prototype to try out -- note that it uses a clear polycarbonate case while the actual production models will use either black or white polycarbonate. The leather comes in black or brown, and if the original Wally is any indication, it will get a nice patina over time that looks just great.

The case is much stiffer and sturdier than most of the polycarbonate cases we review here at TUAW, and I hope that Distil Union plans to keep using a similar thickness for production models. Full openings at the top and bottom of the case make it simple to insert and remove your iPhone 5.

One thing I'd like to see in the production models would be to have the leather cover both sides of the case; at the present time, it only covers the right side (looking at the front of the iPhone 5). Having a strip of leather on the lower-left side beneath the volume buttons would add to the leather feel when holding the Wally Case in your hand. Adding a texture to those side pieces would also make the Wally Case much more "grippy."

The original Wally and Distil Union were helpful in personally getting me away from the dreaded Costanza wallet. Distil Union recommends holding a bare minimum of IDs and credit / debit cards in the Wally, then digitizing other cards for safekeeping in Lemon Wallet. I did that, and now I carry a fraction of the weight and thickness of cards that I used to.

While the Wally Case Kickstarter project has just started, I'd venture a guess that it will be just as successful as the original Wally was. If you're in the market for a nice, protective iPhone 5 case that can also serve as a replacement for your wallet, look no further. The official Kickstarter video for the project is below.

INCB President urges Uruguay to remain within the international drug control treaties, noting draft cannabis legislation

For information only - not an official document

UNIS/NAR/1176
1 August 2013

VIENNA, 1 August 2013 (UN Information Service) - The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) has noted with concern a draft law under consideration in Uruguay which, if adopted, would permit the sale of cannabis herb for non-medical use. Such a law would be in complete contravention to the provisions of the international drug control treaties, in particular the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, to which Uruguay is a party.?

In line with its mandate, INCB has always aimed at maintaining a dialogue with the Government of Uruguay on this issue, including proposing a mission to the country at the highest-level.? The Board regrets that the Government of Uruguay refused to receive an INCB mission before the draft law was submitted to Parliament for deliberation.?

INCB urges the Uruguayan authorities to ensure that the country remains fully compliant with international law which limits the use of narcotic drugs, including cannabis, exclusively to medical and scientific purposes. Importantly, the draft legislation, if adopted, might have serious consequences for the health and welfare of the population and for the prevention of cannabis abuse among the youth. The Board calls upon the authorities of Uruguay to carefully consider all possible repercussions before taking a decision.

Exercise Called "Wonder Drug" For Cancer Patients

(CBS) The latest "wonder drug" for cancer isn't a drug at all - but exercise. That's what a British cancer charity had to say in a new report detailing the benefits of exercise for cancer patients.

"Cancer patients would be shocked if they knew just how much of a benefit physical activity could have on their recovery and long term health," Ciaran Devane, chief executive of Macmillan Cancer Support, said in a written statement.

Macmillan's "Move More" report looked at 60 studies and surveyed over 400 health professionals to show how important exercise was to cancer treatment.

The report said doing recommended levels of 150 minutes per week could reduce a breast cancer patient's risk of recurrence or dying by 40 percent and a prostate cancer patient's risk of dying by 30 percent. Exercise also helps curtail side effects like fatigue, depression, osteoporosis, and heart disease for all cancer patients. More physical activity can also reduce the risk of colon cancer by as much as 50 percent, the report said.

"'It doesn't need to be anything too strenuous, doing the gardening, going for a brisk walk or a swim all count," Devane said.

Macmillan's chief medical officer, oncologist Dr. Jane Maher, said in a written statement that health care professionals need to undergo a "cultural change" and make exercise an integral part of cancer care. The report found over half of general practitioners, oncologists, and nurses don't tell their patients the benefits of physical exercise. Maher once counted herself as one of these uninformed physicians.

"The advice that I would have previously have given to one of my patients would have been to 'take it easy'," Maher said. "This has now changed significantly."

Over 11 million Americans have cancer in the U.S. The American Cancer Society also recommends maintaining an active lifestyle to reduce cancer risk.

Apple to unveil next iPhone Sept 10: report

(Reuters) - Apple Inc, the world's largest technology company, is expected to present its redesigned iPhone in September, according to technology blog AllThingsD.

The blog cited unnamed sources as saying that Apple will unveil its next smart phone at a special event on Sept 10.

The company was not immediately available for comment.

Apple's iPhone launches are among the most-watched events on the tech industry calendar.

Reuters reported in June that Apple is exploring launching iPhones with bigger screens, as well as cheaper models in a range of colors, over the next year, according to several sources with knowledge of the matter.

The new iPhone would hit store shelves in time for the crucial holiday season.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Joe Biden may run for president in 2016, or he may not. But he wants you to know he could.

Iowa. New Hampshire. South Carolina. Michigan. Three years out from the next presidential election, the vice president is polishing his connections and racking up favors in all the right states to ensure he stays part of the conversation, keeping his name near the top of a list of likely contenders even if the prime spot seems to have already been claimed by Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Biden's advisers and friends say his crowded schedule of campaign events to boost Democrats in key primary states reflects his role as vice president and a party leader, not some grand strategy to lay the groundwork for a presidential campaign he hasn't yet decided to undertake.

But Democratic activists and donors say the signals are all too clear when a two-time presidential candidate who is openly entertaining a third run makes the trek to early primary states.

"He's doing the smart thing. He's moving around. He's going to the early states. He's letting folks know he's interested," said Dick Harpootlian, who chaired the South Carolina Democratic Party until earlier this year. He described the stops as a chance to "meet all the major players in the Democratic primary process, in one room, in one night."

That Biden, 70, is still interested in the top job is far from a secret, and in his current office, the writing is on the wall.

"I have two portraits hanging: one of Jefferson, one of Adams. Both vice presidents who became presidents," Biden told GQ last month, noting the former presidents' self-satisfied expressions. "I joke to myself, I wonder what their portraits looked like when they were vice presidents."

As a two-term sitting vice president, Senate veteran and Democratic Party luminary, Biden in any other year would have the right of first refusal for the Democratic nomination.

This time, though, Biden's decision and prospects are both irrefutably colored by Clinton, who a growing number of Democratic groups are hyping as President Barack Obama's heir apparent as they seek to recruit her to join the race. So although Biden and other Democrats are looking to Clinton before they decide how to proceed, the vice president is signaling that nobody should count him out just yet.

A trip next month to Iowa to headline a major Democratic fundraiser, announced Sunday, offered the latest infusion of energy into the will-he-or-won't-he parlor game already consuming much of the Democratic establishment.

Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin's annual steak fry, to be held this year in Indianola in mid-September, is a marquee event on the Iowa Democratic calendar and a magnet for White House hopefuls looking to curry favor with donors and party bigwigs in Iowa, which kicks off the primary calendar with its first-in-the-nation caucuses.

"The people who really do the work for the party and a lot of the funders that contribute, will be at the steak fry, no doubt about it," Harkin said in an interview.

Biden's office sought to play down the trip, telling reporters that Biden had committed previously to attending Harkin's event, but couldn't attend in 2012 and took a rain check. But the Iowa swing is the latest in a string of Biden appearances that further his ties to key primary states ? starting in Washington on the weekend Obama was inaugurated for his second term.

One of a few invitations to Biden's private swearing-in went to New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan, a Democrat and outspoken Clinton supporter in 2008 who would be a powerful ally for any 2016 candidate in the state's first-in-the-nation primary. But first, Hassan must be re-elected next year. So later in August, Biden will head to Maine to raise campaign dollars for Hassan at the home of a prominent Democratic lobbyist.

Biden has also campaigned this year in key states on the Democratic fundraising circuit, like California and Massachusetts, and has held periodic "donor maintenance" events in Washington, keeping his contacts with the Democratic donor class fresh.

And in May, Air Force Two whisked Biden down to South Carolina, where he keynoted the state party's Jefferson-Jackson dinner, another marquee event, and appeared at a fish fry for Rep. Jim Clyburn, a member of House Democratic leadership, where Biden received rock-star treatment from an adoring crowd kicking back beers as Biden riffed on voting rights and the plight of the middle class.

"As soon as I show up in South Carolina, the Washington press corps comes out and says, 'Is Biden getting ready?'" he said that night in May, a wink to the fact that while his advisers claim he's not trying to encourage 2016 speculation, he's not exactly trying to discourage it, either.

BlackBerry weighs putting itself up for sale

(AP) ? BlackBerry will consider selling itself after the long-awaited debut of its new phones failed to turn around the struggling smartphone maker.

The company said Monday that its board has formed a special committee to explore "strategic alternatives" in hopes of enhancing the company's value and boosting adoption of its BlackBerry 10 platform.

The company said its options could also include joint ventures, partnerships, or other moves.

The Canadian company's U.S-traded stock closed up 10.5 percent to $10.78 on Monday.

The BlackBerry, pioneered in 1999, had been the dominant smartphone for on-the-go business people and other consumers before Apple debuted the iPhone in 2007 and showed that phones can handle much more than email and phone calls. In the years since, BlackBerry Ltd. has since been hammered by competition from the iPhone as well as Android-based rivals. In January, the company unveiled new phones running a revamped operating system called BlackBerry 10 designed to better compete. But its market share continues to lag, and the company warned in June of future losses.

Mike Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord Genuity, said sales are getting worse even with price reductions for the new phones.

"Now they have to go to the next step of what's best for the company and shareholders to survive long term because it doesn't look promising on BlackBerry 10 sales," Walkley said.

Monday's announcement marks the second time BlackBerry has said it has hired bankers to help weigh its options since Thorsten Heins became CEO in early 2012. The company had faced numerous delays modernizing its operating system with the BlackBerry 10. During that time, it had to cut more than 5,000 jobs, and shareholder wealth declined by more than $70 billion.

Heins had said then he was not actively looking to sell BlackBerry, but wanted to be prepared given the challenging environment. He ended up focusing on launching BlackBerry 10 this year, but the company warned in June of future losses.

Analysts on Monday began guessing who might want to buy BlackBerry.

"If they can get it done they should absolutely do it. If (BlackBerry has) a future it would be better to do out of the public eye," said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis.

Given that director Prem Watsa, the company's largest investor with a 9.9 percent stake, is resigning from BlackBerry's board "due to potential conflicts that may arise during the process," some picked him as a possible bidder.

Watsa has said that he believes BlackBerry can turn itself around, but that it might take three to five years. He's the founder of insurance company Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. and is one of Canada's best-known investors. "I continue to be a strong supporter of the company, the board and management as they move forward during this process, and Fairfax Financial has no current intention of selling its shares," Watsa said in a statement issued by BlackBerry.

Gillis said Watsa, partnered with some financial backers like pension funds, could try to buy BlackBerry. Walkley rejected that idea, saying if Watsa were interested, he would have tried to buy BlackBerry before now.

Technology companies like Apple, Google or Microsoft would not be interested because they already have their own mobile platforms, Gillis said. "Anyone who is a player in the space has taken a sniff and moved on. Now you've got financials."

Jefferies anaylst Peter Misek, however, said South Korea's Samsung could be interested in buying BlackBerry because Google has launched a new phone of its own from its Motorola division, the Moto X. In its quest for an independent operating system for its phones, adding BlackBerry's capabilities would be far easier than developing a system from scratch, Misek said.

There has also been speculation that the PC maker Lenovo or telecommunications equipment maker Huawei, both based in China, were interested in BlackBerry. But Gillis also said he doesn't see Canadian or U.S. regulators allowing BlackBerry to be owned by a Chinese company.

Major clients like the U.S. Department of Defense would abandon BlackBerry if it was bought by a Chinese company, Gillis said. "Its core reputation for security would fall apart really fast."

The strategic review will be headed by Timothy Dattels, who joined BlackBerry's board last year and is a senior partner at TPG Capital, one of the world's largest private equity firms.

BlackBerry said in its release that there can be no assurance that the exploration process will result in any transaction and declined further comment unless and until its board approves a specific sale or concludes a review of strategic alternatives.

JP Morgan Chase & Co. is serving as its financial adviser and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Torys LLP are legal advisers.

Firefighters make progress battling California wildfire

The remains of a home and a car destroyed by a wildfire are seen on Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, near Banning, Calif. The remains of a home and a car destroyed by a wildfire are seen on Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, near Banning, Calif.

BANNING, Calif. ? Firefighters made steady progress Saturday in battling Southern California?s latest destructive wildfire, which burned 26 homes and threatened more than 500 others in the San Jacinto Mountains.

The so-called Silver Fire, which charred 30 square miles in three days, was 70 percent surrounded. The fire stopped advancing Saturday as firefighters focused on extinguishing hot spots.

Full containment was expected Sunday evening.

The blaze injured 10 firefighters and seriously burned a mountain biker who was overrun by the fast-moving flames when the fire erupted Wednesday.

At its peak, the fire forced the evacuation of 1,800 people, including 800 campers, but orders were lifted for all evacuees.

Gov. Jerry Brown declared an emergency for the area Friday, freeing up additional funds and resources for the firefight and recovery.

Most of Southern California?s severe wildfires are associated with Santa Ana winds, caused by high pressure over the West that sends a clockwise flow of air rushing down into the region.

This week?s fire, however, was being fanned by a counter-clockwise flow around a low pressure area over northwest California. The National Weather Service said conditions could change in the second half of next week, with weaker winds in the mountains and deserts.

Bucs coach Greg Schiano pushing DaQuan Bowers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano, right, talks to defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, left, and defensive end Da'Quan Bowers during training camp Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, in Tampa.

Last Modified: Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 5:21 p.m.

TAMPA ? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers need a better pass rush, and according to coach Greg Schiano, that means they need a better Da?Quan Bowers.

Schiano has been on his third-year defensive end ? during practices and after ? all summer long.

?It?s certainly not anything personal. We both want the same thing,? Schiano said Saturday. ?He wants to be an every-down player and we need an every-down defensive end so we?re just trying to get there.?

Bowers was the only Bucs regular to play the entire first half Thursday night in a 44-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the preseason opener. His performance drew mixed reviews from Schiano.

?I felt like I needed it,? Bowers said. ?I?m an unproven defensive end in this league. I felt like I needed the extra work. I talked to coach about it. He agreed, I agreed so we came up with a plan.?

Even after investing premium picks on three defensive linemen, including Bowers, in the 2010 and 2011 drafts, the Bucs have ranked among the bottom teams in the NFL in sacks every year. Last year, they had the worst pass defense in the league (379.9 yards per game) while recording only 27 sacks.

?That was one of our issues,? Schiano said. ?We haven?t had that yet, with a four-man front or a three-man front getting to the quarterback consistently. Until we do it, there needs to be concern.?

The 6-foot-4, 288-pound Bowers, a second-round pick in 2011, has 41/2 sacks in 26 games. Staying on the field as a full-time player might be the solution to that lack of production.

?I think it?s a lot harder than the average person thinks,? said Bowers, whose career has been slowed by Achilles and knee surgeries. ?I think coach Schiano said it best: when you?re a starting pitcher you have a lot more pitches than a closer, so you know you just have to get ready to go. You have to bring your A Game and be prepared.

?I?m a firm believer that there?s no missed opportunities in this league. If I don?t take advantage of it, then somebody on the street will.?

Schiano intends to make sure Bowers taps his potential.

?Da?Quan has what we refer to as heavy hands,? Schiano said. ?He?s strong so when he puts his hands on you, you feel it. When he plays with good pad level and does that, he?s a force, but when he doesn?t, he?s not a force. I think it?s just practicing being a consistent player.?

?Coach is a straightforward guy and I respect him,? said Bowers. ?He said he wanted more out of me so it?s my job to come out here and give him more, give him all that I have until I don?t have any more.?

NOTES: Former Bucs receiver Keyshawn Johnson was in camp to do an ESPN interview with cornerback Darrelle Revis. In the season opener Sept. 8, Revis will be in a situation similar to the one Johnson was in 2000, when he faced his former team, the New York Jets, in a September game. ?It was the same story ? two picks, blah-blah-blah, bunch of money, the hype, so we?ll put it in the can and use it for Week 1,? Johnson said. ?That way I won?t have to come down here and fight the media that week to get an interview from him.? . . . Guard Carl Nicks, who missed most of last season with a toe injury, has been working with the first team in practice, but no decision was announced on whether he will play at New England . . . The Bucs will practice against the Patriots on Tuesday and Wednesday in New England before playing Friday night . . . The Bucs signed safety Troy Nolan.

Furyk has lead heading to final round of PGA

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) ? The final moments Saturday at Oak Hill brought out more emotion as big putts kept falling in the PGA Championship, with one big difference.

These putts were for par.

Jim Furyk, after a 3-wood struck so poorly off the 18th tee that he couldn't have reached the green even if he had been in the fairway, worked his way up the 472-yard hole until he had a 15-foot putt from the fringe to keep a one-shot lead. The ball curled into the left corner of the cup, and the 43-year-old emphatically shook his fist.

Adam Scott, whose sweet swing turned sour on the last few holes, was on the verge of letting the lead get another shot away from him when he knocked in a 15-foot putt for par on the 17th hole, bowed his head and pumped his fist.

And then there was Jason Dufner, whose disappointment turned to surprise on the 18th hole when he took a step toward the cup to tap in a missed putt and watched gravity pull it into the hole for a par that put him in the final group.

Perhaps those scenes were a prelude for Sunday, the final round of the final major of the year.

"It's only going to get harder," Furyk said.

Oak Hill finally had enough elements for a tough test, and Furyk showed enough of his western Pennsylvania grit for a 2-under 68 and a one-shot lead over Dufner.

Grinding to the end in a swirling wind that cast doubt on so many shots, Furyk closed with two clutch putts ? one for birdie to regain the lead, the par putt to keep it ? that put him 18 holes away from winning another major 10 years after his U.S. Open title.

There was nothing fancy about the way he worked his way to the top of the leaderboard at 9-under 201, but then, that's rarely the case with Furyk. He made three birdies and two tough pars on the back nine, and the one bogey was a bunker shot that hit the pin and rolled 7 feet away.

He was so wrapped up in his game that he didn't even know the score.

"Give me a leaderboard. Where are we at?" he asked before he was told he was one shot ahead of Dufner, and two clear of Henrik Stenson.

"I'm comfortable with where I'm at," Furyk said. "There's a crowded leaderboard at the top, and instead of really viewing it as who is leading and who is not, I'm really viewing it as I need to go out there tomorrow and put together a good, solid round of golf. Fire a good number and hope it stacks up well."

Dufner was eight shot worse than his record-tying 63, but at least he got into the final group at the PGA Championship for the second time in three years. At the Atlanta Athletic Club in 2011, he had a four-shot lead with four holes to go and lost to Keegan Bradley in a playoff.

"I was young, new to doing the majors," Dufner said. "I think that was the third or fourth major I played in. So hopefully, the experience I've had since then will pull me through and give me a chance to win tomorrow."

Stenson, a runner-up at the British Open three weeks ago, dropped only one shot over the last 16 holes and ran in a pair of 12-foot birdie putts for a 69 and was two shots behind. Sweden's odds of winning a major have never been this high. Stenson will play in the penultimate group with Jonas Blixt, who had a 66.

The surprise was Scott, who was poised to seize control at any moment.

Scott blasted a driver on the uphill, 318-yard 14th hole that was so pure he snatched his tee from the ground as the ball was still rising. It stopped 25 feet below the cup, and he had an eagle putt to tie for the lead. The Australian two-putted for birdie, and two holes later fell back with a double bogey on the 16th. Scott escaped further damage with a 15-foot par save on the 17th and managed a 72. He was four shots behind, along with Steve Stricker, who had a 70.

Those were the only five players within five shots of the lead.

Still with an outside chance was Rory McIlroy, who came to life with three birdies over his last six holes for a 67. McIlroy, trying to join Tiger Woods as the only repeat winners of the PGA in the stroke-play era, knocked in a 40-foot birdie putt on the 17th and then showed more emotion than he has all year when he chipped in for birdie on the 18th.

"It was good to feel the sort of rush again," McIlroy said.

He was at 3 under, still six shots behind.

Woods, meanwhile, will have to wait eight more months to end his drought in the majors. He opened with two bogeys in three holes and shot a 73 to fall 13 shots behind. It was a shocking performance from the world's No. 1 player, mainly because he was coming off a seven-shot win at Firestone that included a 61.

Woods has made only seven birdies in 54 holes ? four of them on par 3s.

British Open champion Phil Mickelson was even worse. He sprayed the ball all over Oak Hill on his way to a 78, matching his highest score ever in the PGA Championship.

No one looked terribly comfortable at the start, not with the swirling wind and water hazard that winds its way along the front nine.

U.S. Open champion Justin Rose fell apart early with back-to-back double bogeys that sent him to a 42. He wound up with a 77. Scott opened with a 20-foot birdie putt, only to follow with back-to-back bogeys. And when Dufner ended his string of pars by driving into the creek on No. 5 for double bogey, it appeared that this tournament was wide open. The leaders steadied themselves, leaving the title Sunday it still up for grabs but likely among fewer players.

Scott knows as well as anyone how unpredictable a final round can be.

He was four shots up with four holes to play at the British Open last year and watched Ernie Els win the claret jug. At Muirfield last month, Mickelson came from five shots behind on the final day and won by three.

"I would like to be leading," Scott said. "Four back is well within reach. Anything can happen in a major. We just saw the pin spots get tough today, and scoring in the final groups was very difficult. With so much danger around, it's hard to be completely free where major pressure is on the line. Tomorrow is going to be similar."

Sinkhole causes resort villa to partially collapse

CLERMONT, Fla. (AP) ? A sinkhole has caused a villa at a central Florida resort to partially collapse while another section of it is sinking.

Lake County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Tony Cuellar says about 30 percent of the three-story villa collapsed around 3 a.m. Monday. The building had already been evacuated and no injuries have been reported.

Authorities were called to the Summer Bay Resort, which is about 10 miles west of Disney World, late Sunday where they found the building was making popping noises and windows were breaking.

Cuellar says the sinkhole is in the middle of the villa and is about 40 to 50 feet in diameter. He says authorities think it's getting deeper but can't yet tell if it's growing outward.

Oklahoma football: Practice Report

Position update: Quarterback

Blake Bell and Trevor Knight keep sharing snaps. OU keeps insisting the job remains open, coaches and players alike.

Wide receiver Jalen Saunders was asked specifically about Bell last week. His answer: Blake's been looking pretty good, just like all the other quarterbacks. The competition's going well. He's been coming out and throwing the ball well and running the ball well, just like every other quarterback.

Saunders was asked specifically about Bell's arm. His answer: "He has a nice ball, just like every other quarterback we have here."

"We'll see when the season rolls around who the starter is," Saunders added.

Apparently so.

News and notes

Remember Reynolds?: Jaz Reynolds has one last shot to contribute to the OU receiver corps. If he follows his pattern, he just might.

Reynolds finished his freshman season of 2009 strong, indicating he might be ready for a breakout '10. Instead, he was suspended for Twitter remarks about a shooting on the Texas campus. OU called it a redshirt.

Reynolds came back and contributed 41 catches and 715 yards in '11, only to be suspended the following May for team rules violations. That put him right back in the doghouse, where he stayed through last season. He didn't play a down.

Reynolds, now a fifth-year senior, is due another bounceback.

So?

"He's working and doing a real good job," Bob Stoops said last week. "Nothing electrifying, but he's doing well. ...

"It's not easy. There are a lot of other guys that are doing pretty good. We'll see if he can earn some playing time."

Ikard gets All-America talk: Assuming half the battle for linemen is preseason attention, Gabe Ikard is halfway to becoming OU's first All-American center since Vince Carter in 2004.

Ikard appeared on SI's first-team All-America squad last week, following up appearances the senior captain has made on other preseason honor rolls.

Last year Ikard was an Academic All-American and a first-team All-Big 12 Conference center.

Opponent watch: West Virginia

The Mountaineers couldn't stop anyone last year, and it led to their undoing. They hope that by the time they come to Owen Field in Week 2, they'll put up more of a defensive fight.

News out of their camp this week didn't exactly help that cause.

Nana Kyeremeh, believed to be a potential starting cornerback, was lost for the season with a shoulder injury. West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen told reporters Kyeremeh was considering surgery heading into camp. When the shoulder popped out during practice, the decision was made.

Endangered turtles released to the wild

Once on the brink of extinction, the state?s western pond turtle is making a slow recovery thanks to a multi-institutional conservation program. Woodland Park Zoo and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife will release more than 80 turtles that were collected from the wild as eggs, hatched and ?head started? at Woodland Park Zoo to improve their chance of survival in the wild. Once the turtles reach a suitable size of about 2 ounces, large enough to escape the large mouths of bullfrogs, they are returned to their homes and closely monitored by biologists. The largest of the 10-month-old turtles are equipped with tiny radio transmitters glued to their shells so biologists can learn more about post-release dispersal, habitat use during active and hibernation periods and, ultimately, their survival rate. Chris Brown suffers seizure from emotional stress

(AP) ? Chris Brown's publicist says the singer has suffered a seizure brought on by intense fatigue and extreme emotional stress.

Publicist Nicole Perna says the "Look At Me Now" singer suffered a non-epileptic seizure early Friday morning while he was working in a Los Angeles studio.

A doctor examined the 24-year-old but he wasn't hospitalized.

Perna says what she referred to as the "continued onslaught of unfounded legal matters and the nonstop negativity" contributed to Brown's illness.

The singer has been on felony probation since the 2009 beating of then-girlfriend Rihanna.

A judge revoked his probation last month and ordered a hearing in a May 12 hit-and-run case.

In February, authorities investigated a fight between Brown and singer Frank Ocean at a recording studio, but Ocean didn't press charges.

Google Posts Factory Images and Binaries for Second Generations Nexus 7 Modders

After what can only be described as a tumultuous week, Google has finally gone and posted a factory image and binaries for its 2013 model Nexus 7 codenamed "razor." Unfortunately for the open source community, the delay in making these files available to the public led to the resignation of Jean-Baptiste Queru (JBQ), former Technical Lead of Google's Android Open Source Project.

JBQ can be considered one of the good guys and frequently made himself available on Google Groups to answer questions posed by developers. He also played a big role in keeping everything about Android 'open' to the community.

It's widely believed that Qualcomm was the reason it took so long to post a factory image and binaries. A Qualcomm SoC powers the Nexus 7, and the chip maker isn't nearly as 'open' as the operating system its powering in Google's newest device.

In any event, the files are available now, and if you plan on modding or otherwise experimenting with the underlying code, you may want to grab the factory image in case things go wrong. In addition, we should start to see some interesting ROMs pop up as a result of these files.

Snowden's father gets visa to visit son in Russia

WASHINGTON (AP) ? National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden's father has secured documents to visit his son in Russia and plans to discuss how he could fight espionage charges, Lon Snowden and his attorney said Sunday.

Neither Lon Snowden nor his attorney Bruce Fein has spoken directly with the former NSA analyst since he fled the United States and received asylum in Russia, they said. But the father and lawyer also said they look forward to meeting with Edward Snowden to consider options for the leaker to return to the United States at some point.

"As a father, I want my son to come home if I believe that the justice system ... is going to be applied correctly," Lon Snowden said.

But the elder Snowden isn't convinced his son would get a fair hearing in court, given what he called "absolutely irresponsible" descriptions of his son's actions from President Barack Obama, his administration and top lawmakers from both parties.

"They have poisoned the well, so to speak, in terms of a potential jury pool," said Lon Snowden, of Allentown, Pa.

Edward Snowden roiled the United States intelligence agencies and upended US relations around the globe with his disclosures of highly classified programs that allow the United States to collect millions of pieces of data, including Americans' phone records. The government has charged him with violations of the Espionage Act in federal court in Alexandria, Va.

Fein said the family is willing to discuss conditions under which Edward Snowden might return to the United States and perhaps face criminal proceedings. Fein added that he plans to "suggest criminal defense attorneys who've got experience with criminal Espionage Act prosecutions" when he meets with Snowden.

Edward Snowden's whereabouts in Russia remain unknown. The timing of the visit from Lon Snowden and Fein was uncertain; both declined to elaborate.

Last week, Edward Snowden's Russian lawyer said he had sent Lon Snowden the required invitation to visit the country, a step toward securing a travel visa. Anatoly Kucherena said he hoped a visit would happen in the coming days.

Fein says the trip would happen "very soon."

Russia's decision to grant Edward Snowden temporary asylum angered the U.S. government and scuttled Obama's plans for a one-on-one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in visit Moscow next month.

Lon Snowden said the political outrage in Washington would fade and added "the American people are absolutely unhappy with what they've learned ? and more is going to be forthcoming."

"Where my son chooses to live the rest of his life is going to be his decision. But I would like at some point in time for him to be able to come back to the U.S.," Lon Snowden said.

Lon Snowden and Fein spoke on ABC's "This Week."

Peyton Siva hits trick shot at NBA rookie photo day

Peyton Siva wasn't sure if he would be a Detroit Piston.

The former Louisville Cardinal guard was drafted 56th in June's NBA Draft by a team loaded with backcourt talent. While Siva has the talent and abillity to make a roster, it was unsure if the Pistons would sign him. But on August 5, Siva recieved a contract from the team, and just two days later, Siva was at the NBA rookie photo shoot, putting on a trick shot display.

MORE: Fun with Peyton Siva's wedding registry

It's one thing to hit a trick shot at practice in front of coaches and team managers, but Siva did it in front of the tops rookies in the league, not to mention a handful of photographers.

He's just days in to his tenure with the Pistons, but hes already the NBA rookie leader in trick shots.
